When a product's label or listing says research-use only (RUO), "for laboratory research use only", it isn't marketing boilerplate. It's an honest framing, and also the single most common source of confusion. Let's break it down calmly: what research-use means, what a Certificate of Analysis (COA) actually confirms, and, crucially, what a COA does not confirm.
What research-use (RUO) means
Research-use only is a substance's status as a research reagent. It means exactly what it says: the substance is intended for laboratory research and is not approved for human use. It's a legal and factual status, not a wink that says "you actually can, they just have to write that."
Important: research-use is about intended use, while purity is about what's in the vial. Two different things, and one doesn't substitute for the other.
What a COA confirms, and what it doesn't
COA (Certificate of Analysis) is a lab certificate for a specific batch. A good COA from an independent lab confirms two things:
- Identity, that the vial contains the stated molecule (e.g. by mass spectrometry).
- Purity, what percentage of the material is the target compound (e.g. by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography, a purity-testing method)).
This matters: without a COA you know neither what it is nor how pure it is, and the market is full of relabeled powder, impurities and underdosed vials.
But here's what a COA does not do: it does not make a substance approved for human consumption, and it is not a usage instruction. A pure research reagent stays a research reagent. Purity ≠ permission to use. That's the single most important sentence on this page.
How to read a COA
- Substance and batch (lot). A COA should reference a specific lot, not be "one certificate for everything."
- Lab. Who ran the analysis, an independent third party, or "we checked ourselves"?
- Method and purity. The method (HPLC etc.) and a purity percent, a valid value in the range (0, 100].
- Identity. Confirmation the molecule is the right one (mass spectrum).
Red flags
- No COA at all, or one certificate "for all batches."
- A seller only in a messenger, with no public batch verification.
- "100%" purity with no method and no lab, or a "99.9%" figure with no document behind it.
- A price far below market "for the same purity."

Because the laboratory is independent of whoever made the material, its conclusion is not tied to the seller. Batches ship with COAs that we publish in an open archive, so the report can be read before purchase.
How to verify a batch
To check a batch, find the lot number on the label and open the verification page or the COA archive. The archive searches by batch number or name (the ?q= parameter). Then match the lot, lab, date and readouts against the report. The QR code on the package leads to the verification page, not to the COA of that specific batch.
