Cerebrolysin composition
The composition of Cerebrolysin is an aqueous solution of a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides (below ~10 kDa) and free amino acids. The active fraction is roughly 25% of the concentrate, and the rest is water for injection. The developers' idea is that the short peptides in this mixture resemble fragments of natural neurotrophic factors in size and structure. This peptide nature of the composition is what the claimed neuroprotective effect is attributed to.
How Cerebrolysin works
Its mechanism is described as "neurotrophic-like": according to preclinical research, Cerebrolysin peptides can influence neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. In part they mimic the action of the brain's own growth factors (such as BDNF and GDNF). The evidence has a clear limit: many of these effects were shown in cell and animal models, while the results of human clinical trials remain inconsistent.
Why Cerebrolysin is banned in some countries
A more accurate wording is "not registered / not approved" rather than "banned".
