That is an important point: the molecule did not stay a purely preclinical idea but underwent a controlled test in humans, with all the limitations of an early development stage.

Why researchers find it interesting

A direct activator is a more convenient tool for studying AMPK than an indirect one: it lets you separate the effect of the enzyme itself from the side changes in energy balance that an indirect approach drags along.
