When people hear "weight-loss injection", they most often think of Ozempic. But the brand registered specifically for weight management is a different one, Wegovy from Novo Nordisk. And here lies a confusion worth sorting out: Wegovy and Ozempic are the same active substance, semaglutide, just in different "packaging", for different indications and on a different dosing regimen.
In short: the molecule is one, but the official purpose, dosing and even the target audience are different. Let us work out what this means in practice and why queries like "wegovy or ozempic" actually compare not two substances but two decisions by the same manufacturer.
Wegovy is semaglutide under a different indication
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: it mimics the hormone released in the gut after a meal, strengthens satiety, slows gastric emptying and acts on the appetite centers in the brain. The key difference is not in the chemistry but in the registration:
- Ozempic is approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (lowering glucose, and only as a "bonus", weight too).
- Wegovy is approved specifically for chronic weight management, in adults with obesity or overweight with accompanying conditions, and in a number of jurisdictions for adolescents as well.
In other words, the manufacturer took the same substance, ran a separate research program for the "weight" indication and brought it to market as a separate brand with its own, higher dosing regimen.

The main thing to take from the table: selecting the specific dose and the pace of increasing it is always a physician's decision, not a self-selection from an internet guide. The effectiveness of semaglutide for weight management was studied in the large clinical program STEP (phase 3), with separate branches during titration to higher doses and in oral forms (the OASIS program). These are real, published trials, not marketing promises, and it is on their results that the registration of Wegovy for the weight indication was built.
It is important to keep the other side in mind too. The most common class of adverse events is gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort. They are usually most pronounced at the start and during dose escalation, but that is exactly why the whole process should be led by a physician.
