Practical dosing and effect details

HGF is a large protein (hepatocyte growth factor), so oral intake is not considered for it: the digestive system breaks down proteins of this size before they can be absorbed. In the referenced Phase I/II trial it was given exclusively by intravenous infusion (about 3 hours) daily for 12-14 days. The dose here is set in mg/m² of body-surface area rather than fixed milligrams, a common approach for compounds with a narrow therapeutic window, where the load is matched to the patient's size. The planned escalation to 1.2-2.4 mg/m² per day was not reached in that trial, so the upper figure in the table remains theoretical rather than clinically confirmed. The preclinical rat data (0.25-2.5 mg/kg, SC, IM, or IV) cover a wider range of administration routes, but that is a different species, and it does not carry over to humans directly.
